General Principles of Vastu

Creating Balance in Our Lives

Using the principles of Vastu, you can bring any building into balance, attract positive energy and enhance prosperity and abundance. In this way, your home or workspace will become a haven, a sanctuary where you feel productive, healthy and at peace.

Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra, (Vastu meaning building and Shastra meaning science), is a method of bringing natural beauty, balance and serenity to your home, office or other structure, transforming environments into places of increased peacefulness and productivity, a way of organizing our living spaces and workspaces for optimum harmony. Through implementing the ancient, sacred principles of Vastu, you can learn to become connected to the source of infinite possibility, so that the gifts of the universe flow to you freely, without obstruction.

Vastu comes from the ancient body of wisdom from India called the Vedas. Specifically Atharva Veda, which deals with how to improve the quality of life and contains Ayurveda, the science of health, Jyotish Shastra, the science of astrology, yoga and meditation.

Vastu is India’s ancient Vedic tradition of design, architecture, and sacred space. It is both architecture and the art of how to honor and fill the space enclosed within that form. Today everyone is familiar with how yoga presents a path to greater harmony, health, energy and joy in life. As the “yoga of design” Vastu offers another way to achieve these benefits by working in alignment with nature when creating and enhancing the spaces in which we live. Since yoga, meditation, Ayurveda and Jyotish (Vedic astrology) are now becoming more well-known, it is only natural that this valuable system of architecture and design is recognized and explored for the enrichment it can give human life.

Vastu Shastra has influenced architectural monuments throughout the world. The Greek Parthenon, the Egyptian and Mayan Pyramids, the Taj Mahal and the Roman Coliseum. Knowledge of Vastu, sacred architecture, spread throughout India and other parts of the planet, thousands of years ago, through the travels of those having knowledge of Vastu, crossing the oceans. Mayan pyramids in Mexico, and stonework in Peru follow Vastu techniques, guidelines and measurements in detail, and aligning with the cardinal directions. Vastu was known in Greece and Rome. Merchants journeyed on trade routes to bring back spices and treasures from India to Europe and brought back knowledge of Vastu.

Over time, people have lost touch with the importance of living in harmony with the natural environment. Our homes and places of work have gradually become filled with unnecessary stress and strife. Very simple adjustments, using tools that return the five elements to balance, will often alleviate this stress. Such adjustments can be made economically, without disturbing your environment. When you honor and enliven the Vastu of a building, the spirit of a building, the result is greater health, prosperity and happiness for all who enter.

The Five Elements

Everything that exists in the universe, including our bodies, is made of the five elements. These five elements are earth, (geomagnetic energy) water (gravitational energy) fire (solar energy) air (wind energy) and space (cosmic radiations). These forces have a powerful influence upon us, as well as the environment.

The five elements, air, earth, water, fire, air and space. Everything in the Universe including our physical bodies is made up of the five elements. In any structure the five elements must be in balance to gain the support of nature. The interplay between these elements and the directions affects you on every level of existence. Each of the five elements, together with the directions, north, south, east and west, has a specific Planetary influence as well, making a subtle but profound impact on your daily life.

Each of these elements is associated with a particular direction: water in the northeast, fire in the southeast, earth in the southwest and air in the northwest, and space in the center. By balancing these elements in their proper proportions, we will gain the benefits of health, happiness, and prosperity.

Q. What are the Planetary influences in each of the eight directions?

  1. Moon in the NW- Influences mind and relationships
  2. Mercury in the N- Influences finances
  3. Jupiter in the NE- Spiritual growth and abundance
  4. Sun in the E- Influences health and well-being
  5. Venus in the SE- Influences energy level
  6. Mars in the S-Influences career recognition and advancement
  7. Rahu in the SW-Influences support from family and friends
  8. Saturn in the W- Influences creativity

Planetary Yantras

Planetary Yantras, the Yantras for the eight directions and the center, have the capacity to restore balance in a home or office where problems exist related to the directions or the natural elements. Such problems may be caused by anything that either blocks or reduces the positive flow of energy from the north, northeast, east or the center of the environment. To eliminate environmental stress and gain support for your spiritual growth, happiness and prosperity, planetary Yantras placed inconspicuously in specific directions will attract the positive qualities of nature and protect you from negative influences. Each Planetary Yantra is associated with a specific vibration and influence. Yantras constitute a visual representation of the direction in its perfect harmony.

Meditation was a way of life for the ancient seers. Through their meditations, they were able to see through the veils of time and understand the nature of the universe in the past, present and future. One of the gifts that the seers shared was the knowledge of numerous ways to align one’s energy with that of the universe. This knowledge showed how a person’s mind, body and spirit reflected the outer movements of the cosmos and how one could better align himself with their divine purpose.

The ancient sages of India developed a sacred technology that has the ability to effect energetic transformation of an environment. Vastu utilizes sacred symbols, Yantras, to impact the environment in specific and dramatically beneficial ways. Yantras are geometric shapes imbued with sacred sounds called Mantras. Yantras transmit energetic frequencies that have the power to attract the precise energies needed to positively influence a given aspect of your life.

Your environment, when properly balanced and aligned, is like a Yantra, vibrating with energetic forces that create supportive and nurturing opportunities. The placement of Yantras, the geometric shapes of these powerful Mantras, is an ancient tool of Vastu that is extremely effective in restoring harmony and prosperity in your environment. Creating environmental balance is similar to the work that an acupuncturist does, in that it opens blocked energy.
